The Lion King came on to the theater stage with a distinctive execution; many claim that the show, beginning with its premiere, had transcended the traditional boundaries of theater and transformed into more than the usual adaptation. With its utilization and combination of choreography, outfits, and mainly 3D puppetry, the musical grew to a very unique performance matching up to to all others. Because the story of this stage adaptation features animals, especially the future King Simba and journey to becoming King of the Pride Lands, the most difficult task for the creative team was to bring this tale to life on stage without seeming fake. Julie Taymor, the musical director, embraced this task and equally embraced the craft of puppetry, expertly using life-sized animal puppets onstage interspersed with outfits and music displaying African culture that dignified the musical.

As one of the longest-running musicals, The Lion King has surely cemented its rank as one of the most sought-after musicals in every country it has visited. With two tours across the world that have been running for over a decade and counting, and four others that have been running for more than 20 years, the longtime musical resumes to entertain fans with its timeless story. The Broadway hit has gained consistently positive reviews from from both viewers and reviewers alike in its productions, while garnering several awards and nominations, including but not limited to Tony Awards and Olivier Awards.

Since its premiere in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1997 and eventual move to Broadway, New York in October of the same year, the reach of The Lion King musical has also grown immensely. Spanning several tours for over two decades, it has been produced in several locations with both local U.S. and international performances, spread over locations in Europe such as Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, France, and even Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, and Singapore in Asia to name a few in a very extensive list of regions.
