Winnie Holzman & Stephen Schwartz, producers of Wicked, were motivated by the 1995 Gregory Maguire book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".
This musical has been hailed for its expansion of the backstory of Oz, gifting The Wizard of Oz fans around the world a look into Glinda and Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West). Wicked, even with the main characters beginning as enemies, it's a deep journey about acceptance and friendship. With an incredible costume creation and jaw-dropping special effects, Wicked teleports the audience straight to the wonderful world of Oz!
The production first premiered in 2003, thus it is now 21 years old. Since its first performance, Wicked has surpassed $1 BILLION in revenue on Broadway. Only The Phantom of the Opera & The Lion King have accomplished this incredible achievement. Wicked has also graced theatres outside of Broadway, with records in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and London.
“Defying Gravity”, “For Good”, and “Popular” are some of the numerous famous show tunes that contributed to Wicked winning a Grammy Award.
This historical popularity can be attributed to the musical's Grammy-winning music. The original Broadway production also recieved 3 Tony Awards and 7 Drama Desk Awards.
WICKED is touring with actors Lauren Samuels as Elphaba, Austen Danielle Bohmer as Glinda, plus Blake Hammond as The Wizard.
There is no place like Providence Performing Arts Center to watch a production with its incredible decor and friendly ammenities.
