The tale of The Lion King begins in a fictional region of the African savanna; set in The Pride Lands, the little lion Simba is fated to take over after his father, before tragedy strikes because of the work of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his impulse to rule the Pride Lands and become King himself. The first half's series of occurrences leads to the little lion's escape from The Pride Lands and the story of his consequent journey back to bring peace to his lands and citizens.
The musical, since its formation, had to develop extensive research on real African civilization and historical texts given its context. The plot itself is actually taken from real African heroes and factual events – Simba as an example is the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Malian Empire who was justly referred to The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to gain a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, particularly costume design, which resulted in a faultless live adaptation of the show. The outfits alone are gracious portrayals of several traditional people in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s outfit in the musical which is actually based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' outfits. Just like the previous 1994 film, the remarkable musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African heritage, with the live adaptation even including compositions with lyrics that are sung either in part or fully in African languages including Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African inspiration is also noticeable in choreography, with many of the performances presenting the fluidity of Bali-inspired choreography.
The costume design, song composition, and superb acting all merge effortlessly to deliver an unforgettable musical.
