The Lion King at Providence Performing Arts Center

The Lion King tells the story of the fate of the little lion cub Simba, who prematurely is forced to face his destiny of leading as the leader of the Pride Lands due to unjust killing of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a well-loved King by all of the territory he rules, suffers betrayal from from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which ends in his murder. This forces the lion cub into into hiding for years, and this is where the Prince's coming-of-age story and his subsequent return to The Pride Lands and his destined rule as King.

Taken from the previous 1994 film of the the very same name created by Disney, The Lion King was beautifully adapted to the theater medium by director Julie Taymor and the breathtaking ensemble and production crew. Its debut in 1997 was a fresh addition to theater, being a multi-awarded debut. Greg Evans of Variety elaborates on The Lion King with unequivocal opinions in his posting, sharing that “Julie Taymor's approach of Disney's The Lion King is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unequaled in its creativity, uniqueness, and vigor. As courageous and daring as Simba himself, the Broadway showing improves upon each and every component of the previous 1994 animated movie, from visual artistry and narrative to Lebo M's score and the beautifully Africanized original numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The stage adaptation was also received with the greatest posts from theatergoers. A post specifically makes mention of how this successful musical can appropriately be referred to as “The musical that beats them all”, sharing how he perceived that “the show was fantastic. It was full of color and the music would give you goosebumps. The crafted 3D puppets really carried the roles to life.” Most audiences who have attended the musical over the past 20 years can attest that despite being an adaptation of a movie, Disney's The Lion King succeeded in surpassing expectations.

The approaching May’s run of The Lion King will be found in Providence Performing Arts Center at Rhode Island on Wednesday 27th May 2026.
