Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the brainchild of Jack Thorne and showing in Providence this fall. He wrote the original play with some assistance from the original series’ author J.K. Rowling and beloved theater director John Tiffany. The original Jack Thorne script initially only included a modest two acts. But the creators expanded it to four for an riveting dramatic sensation that audiences would always hold dear.
This Harry Potter play adaptation begins when Albus Potter meets Scorpios Malfoy on their way to Hogwarts. While Albus struggles to live up to his father’s heroic reputation, Scorpios blunders his own unjustified public image as a death eater’s offspring or the circulating rumors of being Voldemort’s child.
Each character faces familiar maturity tests like creating an image that diverges from family histories and fixing parental mistakes. They hope to instigate a better future for themselves and their cohorts. Their modus operandi involves using a time turner so that they can return to the past and keep Cedric Diggory — one of Voldemort’s targets — alive.
Can changing the past correct the damages of the present? Or will it make things worse for the imprudent pair? The Harry Potter play promises to answer these questions during its nearly three-hour runtime. The audience can grab refreshments and hydrate during a brief intermission at the performance’s half-way point.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child claimed pop-culture impact with performances in Melbourne, Australia, Hamburg, Germany, and Tokyo, Japan. It has delighted fans far and wide since its 2016 premier at the Palace Theatre in London, England. Each production perfectly integrates original scores from indie-music darling Imogen Heap.
