The Lion King at Providence Performing Arts Center

The Lion King tells the story of the struggles of the young Lion Prince Simba, who prematurely is forced to accept his role of becoming the leader of the Pride Lands due to unjust killing of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a well-loved leader by all of his lands, suffers betrayal from from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leads to his death. This forces the lion cub into into hiding for years, and jumpstarts Simba's personal change and his sudden homecoming to The Pride Lands and his rightful place as King.

Inspired by the original 1994 movie of the same title created by Disney, The Lion King was beautifully adapted to the Broadway stage by director Julie Taymor and the excellent cast and creative team. Its premiere in the 90s was a testament to its success, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety elaborates on The Lion King with unequivocal opinions in his posting, sharing that “Julie Taymor's approach of this Broadway mainstay is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unequaled in its creativity, uniqueness, and vigor. As courageous and daring as Simba himself, the Broadway showing greatly upgrades each and every component of the hit 90s cartoon film, from design elements and narrative to Lebo M's score and the beautifully Africanized original numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."

Disney's The Lion King was also received with the finest reviews from audiences. One specifically writes about how this successful musical can aptly be considered “The king of all shows”, sharing how he experienced that “the show was spectacular. It was full of color and the music would give you goosebumps. The crafted 3D puppets really brought the characters to life.” Most viewers who have watched the musical over the past 20 years can attest that despite being an adaptation of a motion picture, the musical succeeded in surpassing expectations.

The upcoming May’s season of The Lion King will be performing in Providence Performing Arts Center at Rhode Island on Saturday 30th May 2026. Providence Performing Arts Center, being similarly alive and creative as the Broadway play with its beautifully decorated interior and exterior architecture is pointed to by theatergoers as the only choice to host this acclaimed musical.
