The musical adaptation, The Lion King entered the Broadway stage with a unique technique; many claim that the show, ever since its opening night, had transcended the traditional boundaries of theater and transformed into more than a musical. With its usage and blend of dance, outfits, and largely 3D puppetry, it turned into a very unique performance compared to to all theater performances. Because the story of the adapted musical features animals, especially the young Lion Prince Simba and lighthearted turned courageous life story, the challenge for the production was to basically adapt a cartoon to live action without appearing inauthentic. Julie Taymor, The Lion King’s director, embraced this endeavor and equally embraced the art of utilizing puppets, skillfully utilizing real animal puppets for the live depiction combined with accurate costumes based on African tribes that dignified the Broadway classic.
In current times, The Lion King has truly earned its rank as one of the most popular shows in the world. With two productions globally that have been running for more than 15 years, and four others that have been running for more than 2 decades, The Lion King resumes to reach new audiences in new countries. The musical has always been met with standing ovations from both usual theatergoers and reviewers alike across its productions, while garnering numerous awards and nominations, including Tony Awards and Olivier Awards.
Since its debut in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1997 and subsequent transfer to Broadway, New York in October 1997, the reach of The Lion King musical has also grown immensely. Spanning several tours for over two decades, it has been holding seasons in several cities with both local state tours and international tours, spread over locations in Europe including Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, France, in addition to Singapore, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in Asia which only is a part of a very comprehensive record of regions.
