Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s contemporary mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drafting the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to acclaimed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the duo perfected the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would progress from its humble beginnings to a sought-after spot on Broadway and other well-known stages in London and Canada, making it a international success.
Enter the Underworld, where Hades runs a productive but stringent factory called Hadestown. The exhausted workers perform their unceasing duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their freedom. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice delight in a blossoming romance above ground, despite the challenges of winter’s famine.
Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter escalates above-ground hungers. Eurydice, affected by insatiable yearnings and influenced by the enticing promises of the Fates, lusts after the salvation Hadestown promises. She eventually travels to the underground industrial complex and sells her birthright in exchange for guaranteed food.
Her contract entangles her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an resentful Hades, pressured by his discontented workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades compel Eurydice to do his bidding forever?
In 2019, the musical earned 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its lofty achievements and wall-to-wall audiences demonstrate the play’s connection with a contemporary era while combining classical elements from the past.
